Serious question, how do you handle a boss who gives zero feedback?

I had a talk with my manager last week about my performance and she literally said nothing useful. She just nodded and said keep doing what you're doing. I've been at this company for 18 months and I have no clue if I'm on track for a promotion or if I'm about to get laid off. It's driving me crazy because I want to improve but I don't know what to work on. Have any of you dealt with a manager who won't give you any direction? How did you get them to open up?

That's rough, I've been in almost the exact same spot and it's the worst feeling not knowing where you stand. Maybe try asking her very specific questions like what would make me a strong candidate for promotion or is there anything holding me back from the next level.

Three years ago I was literally in that same boat and let me tell you, asking those specific questions saved my career. I finally just sat down with my manager and said "be brutally honest with me" and she actually laid out exactly what I was missing. Wouldn't you know it, I got the promotion six months later after working on those specific things.

Start with the opposite approach and see how far her silence gets you.
