I thought the 'informational interview' thing was just corporate fluff until a 20-minute coffee chat got me a referral

A friend pushed me to just ask someone at a firm I liked about their path, and that person later emailed me directly when a spot opened on their team.

Wait, is that how it works? My buddy did something similar, just asked a guy at a brewery about his job. That guy ended up texting him when they needed a new driver.

My cousin got a gig that way too, just chatting with a regular at his gym.

Funny how these things happen when you aren't actually looking for work. That pressure to sell yourself is gone, so the chat is just real. People can tell when you're not angling for something. It turns a basic talk into a real connection, and that's what they remember later when an opening pops up.
