I thought the 'dress for the job you want' rule was total nonsense until my $18 blazer moment
I always rolled my eyes at the whole dress for the job you want thing, mostly because I worked warehouse jobs where steel toes and a hi vis vest were the only dress code that mattered. Then about 6 months ago I interviewed at a small logistics office in Columbus and wore my usual jeans and a clean polo, and the guy barely looked up from his screen the whole time. A friend talked me into a $18 thrift store blazer for the second round, same company, different manager, and that guy spent 20 minutes asking me about my process and actually wrote stuff down. I got the job and I honestly can't tell if the blazer did anything or if the first guy was just having a bad day. So which is it, does the outfit actually move the needle for office jobs or am I just reading too much into one weird week? I'd really like to hear from people who hire, does someone walking in underdressed actually change how you see them?
