Storage unit I rented in Phoenix had a scorpion problem and the manager acted like it was normal
Last month I moved my project car across town and rented a 10x20 unit at a place off Camelback Road in Phoenix. The first week I found a bark scorpion sitting on my car cover, and when I told the office the guy just shrugged and said it is the desert, what do you want me to do. I get that scorpions live here, I have lived in Arizona for 12 years, but there is a difference between seeing one in your yard and paying $145 a month for a unit that has gaps under the roll up door big enough to slide a credit card through. I asked if they spray and he said they used to but cut it to save money. So now I am out there every weekend with a black light before I even touch the cover, because scorpions glow under UV and it is the only way I feel ok reaching into the car. My question is for anyone else storing a car in the southwest, do your units seal up tight or is this just something we all deal with and I am being soft about it.
I had the same setup at a place on 19th Ave for two years, and what fixed it for me was getting a roll of that foam weather seal tape from the hardware store, the thick kind meant for garage doors, and running it along the bottom of the roll up door where it meets the concrete. Cost me about $20 and a Saturday morning. I also laid down a line of diatomaceous earth along the inside edge of the walls and the door track, which kills them when they crawl through it and is safe around the car. My unit still wasn't sealed perfect but I went from finding two or three a month to maybe one the whole summer, and I never found another one on the cover. The manager won't do anything because spraying costs them money, so you either move to a climate controlled building with finished walls or you seal it up yourself. You are not being soft, $145 a month should buy you a door that actually closes against the floor.
