The retired ranger who told me to ditch my GPS was right
Ran into a guy at Glacier National Park last month who said my handheld GPS would get me lost in the backcountry. I laughed it off, but after two days of dead battery and rain fogging the screen, I pulled out the paper map he told me to bring. His tip about following the ridgeline instead of the marked trail saved me a 6 mile detour. Now I pack a compass as backup in every bag. Anyone else trust old school gear over tech after a close call?
