Shoutout to my old coleman lantern from 2005
I used to just light that thing with a match and go, but after three trips where the mantles crumbled before dinner, I finally switched to a battery powered one last summer. Took me two years to admit the old way was more trouble than it was worth. Anyone else hang onto old gear way longer than they should?

My old coleman dual fuel lantern from 2001 finally gave up on a trip to Moab last spring. I had it packed in a tote with three spare mantles and a bottle of white gas, but the whole ritual started feeling like a chore. Lighting it with a match was fine until the wind picked up or the mantles got damp overnight. I switched to a cheap USB rechargeable LED one and honestly, I haven't looked back. It's nice to not carry extra fuel or worry about cracking a globe on a rock. Did you have trouble finding a battery powered one that puts out enough light?

Honestly, you're right about the wind and damp mantles being the worst part. That was the breaking point for me too. I ended up getting a Black Diamond Moji and it puts out way more light than I thought it would for the size. It's not as warm as the old Coleman glow but man, it's so much easier. I just toss it in my pack and don't think about it. The only thing I miss is that little pop the mantle made when you first lit it, but that's just nostalgia talking. Tbh, I kept my old one in the garage for a year before I finally donated it.
