My uncle swore by a $15 foam pad from a garage sale in Phoenix. I froze my butt off.
My uncle Rick has been camping since the 70s and he always says you don't need fancy gear, just a closed cell foam pad and a good attitude. So when I went camping near Flagstaff in April, I listened to him and left my inflatable pad at home. The temp dropped to 26 degrees and that thin foam did basically nothing. I could feel every rock and root through it, and my back was cold all night. I woke up at 4am shivering and ended up sleeping in my car. The next morning Rick laughed and said I should have doubled up the foam, which would have been nice to know before I froze. Has anyone else had a relative give them terrible camping advice that they still swear by?
