I was sure that $25 'ultralight' backpacking tarp from that online store was going to be garbage, but it held up through a storm in the Adirondacks last weekend.

So you're telling me the cheap tarp actually worked? I was fully expecting the next post to be about how you used it as a makeshift sail to get blown across the lake. Guess it's time to stop laughing at the gear snobs and start checking my own bank account.

That one storm doesn't prove a thing about long term durability. My buddy's cheap tarp shredded on its second trip in the White Mountains. You still get what you pay for with gear.

Look, I get where you're coming from, but I think @eva468 might have a point about the cheap tarp working once. The real issue is that one buddy's bad trip doesn't mean all cheap gear is junk, just like one storm doesn't prove a fancy tent is perfect. I've seen expensive stuff fail fast and cheap stuff last for years, it's a total crapshoot sometimes. You really have to check the actual materials and stitching, not just the price tag.
