Is it worth fixing a seized lens helicoid or just replacing the whole barrel?

Took me 6 hours across two days to free up a stuck helicoid on a 50mm from a thrift store find, using heat, solvent, and a rubber strap, and I still wonder if a $40 replacement barrel would've been faster. Who else has burned a whole day on a lens that ended up being a lost cause, and when do you call it quits?

Spent an entire Saturday wrestling a jammed zoom ring on an old Tamron, heat gun and all, only to find the glass had fungus anyway. That was the moment I realized my time is worth more than a $30 fix. Now I set a two hour limit on any thrift lens rescue before I start looking for a replacement barrel.
