Guy at the parts counter told me my shutter timing was off because I wasn't cleaning the curtain rails, not the gears
I brought in a Nikon FM2 last month after 3 failed attempts to fix a capping shutter, and he said 'you're chasing the wrong part, those rails are gunked up.' Pulled the mirror box, swabbed the curtain rails with naphtha, and the timing hit within 5% on my tester on the first try. Anyone else been told they were fixing the wrong thing entirely?
Did you check the rail tension before you swabbed, or just go straight to cleaning? Wondering if the gunk was actually causing drag or if it was a tension issue all along. What did the old lube look like when you pulled it apart?
