Why does nobody warn you about pre-finished plywood edge banding?

I tried that iron-on edge banding from a big box store on a walnut pre-finish plywood job for a client in Portland, and it peeled right off after 2 days in their garage. Turns out the pre-finished surface needs a different adhesive, and I wasted about 60 linear feet of banding learning that the hard way. The fix was using a two-part adhesive band that cost 3x more, which made me wonder if I'm just behind the times or if others have hit this too? Has anyone had success with heat-activated banding on pre-finished sheets, or is the expensive glue the only way?
