Shoutout to the guy at the lumber yard in Fort Worth who let me dig through the reject pile
Stopped by a yard over on the south side of Fort Worth last Tuesday to grab some maple for a set of drawers I'm building. The guy at the counter pointed me to the reject rack instead of the nice stuff, said to dig around and see what I thought. Most of it was junk, but I pulled out four boards with nice figure that just had a bad edge or a little cup to them. He let me have the whole stack for $38, which is less than one good board would run me. I took them back to the shop, jointed the edges and got two full drawer fronts and a couple of rails out of them. There was one knot I had to work around, but that's nothing a little planning can't handle. Anyway, it got me wondering how many guys skip the reject pile and just pay full price for clean stock. Do you check the cull rack first, or do you just buy surfaced and be done with it?
