Can we talk about how everyone says get a lawyer right away for SSDI?
I keep seeing folks in Facebook groups tell people to hire a CA disability lawyer the day they get denied, and I just do not buy it for every case. My own dad got denied in Fresno back in 2021 and a friend pushed him to sign with a firm that same week, and all they did for four months was send in the same forms he could have sent himself. I sat with him and read the denial letter line by line, and it was a simple fix, one missing work history form from his old job at the warehouse. We mailed it in ourselves, no lawyer, and he got approved at the reconsideration level about 60 days later. I get that lawyers help with hearings and hard cases, but paying someone 25 percent of back pay when your denial is just a paperwork mix up seems like burning money. Has anyone here actually handled reconsideration alone and still come out fine, or did it blow up in your face?
