Oh man, been there! The trick I figured out after my own smoke alarm fiasco is to tent the ham with foil for most of the bake, and only pull the foil back for the last 20 minutes or so. The glaze goes on in layers, like every 15 minutes you brush more on, and that way the sugar doesn't just pool up and burn on the bottom of the pan. Also line that pan with foil first, I cannot stress that enough, because scraping burnt glaze off a roasting pan is its own special kind of misery. And crack a window before you even turn the oven on, just in case. My dog still hides under the bed whenever he sees me pull out the honey, poor guy. Hope the ham at least tasted good under all that drama!
