My cast iron skillet taught me a lesson after 8 years of abuse

I finally stripped that crusty mess down to bare metal last Saturday and realized I'd been seasoning it wrong the whole time, so has anyone else ever had that moment where you find out your 'tried and true' method was actually the problem?
