the smoke alarm woke up the whole building" is absolutely sending me. I can just picture everyone stumbling out of their apartments in their pajamas trying to figure out what's on fire. Three years ago and you're still living that down, huh? That chicken must have been something else to set off a whole building alarm. Did you ever try roasting a chicken again after that?

It might sound weird but I started putting a piece of bread in the microwave for 10 seconds first to dry it out before I toast it. That way it gets crispy faster and doesn't have time to burn while I'm distracted with something else. Also I swear by setting a timer on my phone for exactly half the toast time so I remember to check on it. That burnt toast smell is the worst because it sticks to everything and you can't get rid of it for hours. I still cringe thinking about the time I had to explain to my landlord why the hallway smelled like a campfire because of a bagel.
