Showerthought: it took me 3 weeks and a new smoke alarm to figure out my oven was lying about its temp
So here is the thing I noticed. I kept burning everything I put in the oven, but only on the right side and only when I used the middle rack. I figured it was me, so for almost a month I stood over it like a hawk, pulling stuff out early, poking at it, second guessing the recipe. It got so bad my partner asked if I was mad at the chicken. Finally last Tuesday I put a $9 oven thermometer in there and let it sit for 20 mins. The dial said 350 and the thermometer said 425. Twenty. Five. Degrees. Hotter. Turns out my oven has been running hot this whole time and I was compensating by cooking everything way too long at what I thought was a lower temp, which explains the hockey puck cookies and the blackened bottoms on my sheet pan veggies. A $12 part from the hardware store on 5th and a screwdriver later and it holds temp fine now. Has anyone else had an oven drift this bad, and did you fix it or just learn the new numbers?
