My neighbor's burnt bread trick for saving a ruined casserole

Last Tuesday I had a huge dinner fail with a 12 dollar chicken casserole, left it in too long at 425 and the top turned into a brick. My neighbor Karen came over to borrow sugar, saw the mess, and told me to grate the burnt crust off with a box grater. I laughed, but tried it, and it honestly saved the whole dish, the inside was still juicy. She also said to put a sheet of foil loosely over it next time at the 30 minute mark, which sounds super simple but I never did that. Has anyone else used a grater to rescue a scorched top, or do you have a weirder save that actually worked?

Grate the burnt top off, who knew Karen was holding a culinary secret this whole time. Next you'll tell me she's got a hack for fixing watery chili with a bag of instant mashed potatoes.
