TIL bolting my bench to the wall made it wobble worse, and now I can't decide if I was wrong
So I had this old workbench in my garage, solid maple top, and it had a little side to side sway when I ran the plane across a board. Read somewhere that bolting the legs to the studs would kill the wobble. Went and got four 3/8 lag screws, drove them through the back legs into the wall, and the sway got worse. Not a lot, but enough that I could feel it in my hands. Turns out my concrete floor is not level, the bench was rocking on one high corner, and bolting it to the wall just moved that rock up into the frame so the whole thing flexed instead of one leg lifting. Took the screws back out, slid a cedar shim under the low leg, and it's dead solid now. Half of me thinks bolting is still smart for safety so it can't tip, the other half thinks a bench should float and you fix the floor first. Where do you all land on anchoring shop furniture to the wall, is it worth it or does it just hide a floor problem?
