Rant: I swapped my impact driver for a hand brace on 40 cabinet hinges and the result made zero sense
Last month I had 40 euro style cabinet hinges to hang in a rental kitchen over in Athens, and on a dumb gut feeling I ditched my impact driver and did every single screw by hand with an old brace I got at a yard sale for $8. I figured it would be slower and quieter, but I was not ready for the doors to line up dead flat on the first pass with basically no adjustment. I went back and checked the same setup with the driver on the next batch and ended up chasing 3 doors around for half an hour. So now I am stuck, was that real or did I just get lucky with softer pine frames? Anyone got a take on this, cause I want to believe the slow twist seats screws cleaner but I also do not want to waste a whole day being sentimental about a hand tool.
Your $8 brace probably has a longer handle than the driver, so you get way more leverage and your wrist stays in line instead of cocking sideways every time. That sideways push is what walks a hinge off center, not the speed of the tool. Try the driver again but choke up on it and keep your arm straight behind the bit, bet you get close to the same result.
