My takeoff sheets used to take me two hours with a scale ruler and a highlighter, now it's 15 minutes and I hate it
For about 6 years I did every takeoff by hand, printing the plans at the shop in Dayton, rolling out the 24x36 sheets on the big table, and marking each wall run with a yellow highlighter so I could double back and check my math. Now it's a PDF viewer and a spreadsheet and the whole thing is done before my coffee gets cold, but I catch way more missed openings because I'm not tracing the line with my finger anymore. My lead guy keeps asking why I still print the sheets anyway, so am I the only one who prints a plan just to hold it and check it by eye?
