Cutting a stair stringer wrong twice before I figured out the wall wasn't square
Last Saturday I was framing stairs in a garage in Boise and my first stringer came up 3/4 inch off at the bottom step. I blamed my tape, recut a second one, and got the same gap, so I finally checked the back wall with a framing square and it was out of plumb by almost an inch. I shimmed the top plate, recut once more, and the treads dropped in clean on the third try. Cost me two 2x12s and about an hour of standing there feeling dumb. Has anyone else had a wall throw off a whole stringer like that, and do you check plumb before you even measure now?
