Just realized the guy at the credit union in Tulsa was right and I was the one being stubborn about my "fun money"
So about 8 months ago I sat down with a guy named Ray at a credit union branch off 21st in Tulsa because I wanted a small loan to cover a car repair, and he asked to see my budget first. I pulled out my phone and showed him my spreadsheet, feeling pretty good about it, and he pointed at my $350 a month "misc" line and just asked me what it was for. I got defensive and said it was my fun money, my call, and he shrugged and said "that's fine, I just think you'd save more if it had a name." I ignored him for months because honestly who wants to be told that. Then in January I finally split it into actual labels like takeout, concerts, and dumb stuff at Target, and turns out $180 of that $350 was just me grabbing food because I didn't plan dinners. I'm not saying his advice was magic, I still spend on fun stuff, but I was so sure I was already on top of it that I almost walked out of his office. Has anyone else had a budget line that looked fine until you actually named what was in it?
