TIL the ticket machine at the Rome train station charges 2 euros more if you pick English, so now I buy at the tabacchi
I was in Rome Termini two years back and kept hitting the English button because my Italian is bad. The machine wanted 12 euros for a regional ticket to Frascati, but a guy behind me pointed at the tabacchi shop and said the same ticket was 9.80 there. I tried it, paid cash, and it worked fine, the only catch is you have to ask for the route by name or they stare at you. Since then I check the little tobacco shops or the app first before touching a kiosk anywhere. Same thing happened in Vienna, machines wanted 2.40 for a single ride, the app was 2.40 too, so it is not always a scam. Curious if anyone has a list of cities where the kiosk is honestly better than the machine, because I am still guessing most of the time.
