Had to pick between a direct flight to Lisbon or a cheap layover in Madrid

I was booking a trip last fall and the direct flight was $650, but a flight with a 9 hour layover in Madrid was only $380. I went with the layover and used it to leave the airport, store my bag at a train station locker for 10 euros, and see the city for a few hours. It felt like a free bonus trip and saved me over $250. Has anyone else planned a long layover on purpose to see a new place?

Totally did that once in Reykjavik. Best part of the trip, honestly. More fun than just sitting at a gate.

Love turning a travel problem into a secret hack. Feels like getting away with something, like finding a twenty in an old coat.

Yeah, booking the layover as two separate tickets saved me a ton.
