PSA: dumped a whole pot of beef stew on the kitchen floor and learned the real cost of 'cheap' cuts
So last Saturday I was trying to stretch a $9 chuck roast into a week of dinners for me and my girlfriend, and right when I went to move the pot off the burner the handle gave out and the whole thing hit the floor. I stood there for a second staring at like 6 servings of food mixed with glass and floor cleaner, just gutted. After I cleaned it up I went back to Aldi and did the math on what actually costs less per meal, and it turns out bone-in chicken thighs at $1.29 a pound plus a bag of dried beans beat the fancy braising cuts every time. I ended up making a big pot of black beans with smoked turkey neck for about $4 total, which fed us four dinners and two lunches. The stew disaster actually got me to stop buying roasts just out of habit. What cheap proteins do you all lean on when beef prices spike?
