I thought canned fish was gross until I tried making a cheap pasta dish

My friend in Portland kept telling me to try sardines, but I was totally against it for years lol. Last month I was broke and saw a can for $1.50, so I mixed it with some pasta, garlic, and lemon from my fridge. It was actually really good and made three meals for under $5 total. Now I keep a few cans in the pantry for when money's tight. Anyone else have a cheap ingredient they were surprised to like?

Disagree with the whole premise. Canned fish is still nasty no matter how broke you are. That metallic taste ruins everything it touches.

Totally feel you. Tried making tuna salad once and it tasted like I licked a penny. Never touched the stuff again.

Actually, a good tuna salad can be really solid. The trick is rinsing the canned tuna really well to get rid of that brine. Mix it with some mayo, a bit of mustard, and chopped celery for crunch. It's a cheap, easy lunch that doesn't have to taste like the can.
