Update: my neighbor in Tucson talked me out of the cheap tires and now I'm stuck defending $480
So I was all set to grab a set of $70 tires from a guy on Craigslist for my old Corolla. My neighbor Dan catches me in the driveway and says, "You'll pay twice for those by winter." I figured he was just being a car guy about it.
But he pulled out his maintenance log, which he keeps in a binder like some kind of maniac, and showed me he'd gone through 3 sets of cheap tires in 4 years. Same road, same car. His good set lasted him 6 years.
I did the math and I hate that he's onto something. I'm not made of money, which is the whole point of this community, but the cheap route can cost you more if you have to do it twice.
Still not sold on it though. Has anyone here actually had a budget tire hold up long term, or am I just going to end up agreeing with Dan?
