My mortar board split on a garden wall job in Dayton and I had to redo 40 feet of joints by hand
Last Tuesday I was finishing up a garden wall in Dayton, about 40 feet of running bond, and my old mortar board finally gave out right in the middle of pointing the joints. The thing had been with me since I was an apprentice back in the 90s, so I figured it owed me nothing, but the timing could not have been worse. Half the joints were still wet and I had a bucket of mortar starting to set up on me in the heat. I ended up dragging an old piece of plywood out of the truck just to have something to hawk the mud on, and it was nowhere near as solid. My grandfather used a wooden board he made himself, and guys I came up with all had their own setup, but now half the young guys on site just use a plastic pan and toss it when it cracks. I lost about an hour and a half reworking those joints by hand with a jointer because the mud had already started to stiffen. Does anyone still make their own board or have a brand that actually holds up past a couple seasons?
