Hot take: I tried eating my lunch in total silence for a week and it drove me up a wall
So for 5 days straight at my shop in Tulsa I ate my 30 minute break with no phone, no radio, no nothing. Just me and a ham sandwich in the truck. Thought it would be relaxing. By Wednesday I was chewing so loud it felt like drums in my ears, and I caught myself counting my own bites out loud. Turns out I do not need more quiet in my day. I need less. Back to the truck radio at full blast now. Anyone else try to be all zen on their break and bounce right off it?
Total silence sounds like a trap to me. Give me a loud radio and a crowded break room over a quiet truck cab any day. When it's too quiet my brain just fills the space with dumb stuff, like replaying arguments I had five years ago or wondering if I locked the shop door. Noise keeps all that junk pushed down where it belongs. The silence thing might work for monks, but for regular folks it just turns up the volume in your own head. Bet you were ready to talk to the ham sandwich by Friday.
