That mystery stew at a street stall in Oaxaca ruined all other soup for me
Last month I was walking through the mercado in Oaxaca and this tiny stall had a pot of something bubbling that smelled like nothing I've ever eaten before. The woman running it just pointed at the pot when I asked what was in it, so I paid 40 pesos and took a bowl. It turned out to be a stew with squash blossoms and some kind of smoky dried shrimp, and I stood there eating it on a plastic stool for like 20 minutes. Now I keep trying to find anything close back home in Portland and everything just tastes flat. Has anyone else chased a specific street food flavor and actually found a recipe that comes close?
