Stranger at the nursery knew my maple by the bark

Last Saturday at the Master Gardener sale in Boise, an older guy stopped me while I was staring at two identical maples. He said 'that one's a Norway, the other's a sycamore, look at the furrows.' He was right, the bark texture was totally different once he pointed it out. Do you trust bark patterns as much as leaf shape when you're IDing trees in winter?
