Question about the fern patch behind my grandma's shed in Duluth

About 20 years ago my grandma had this tangle of ferns behind her shed in Duluth that she never touched, and I remember thinking it just looked messy. Last month I drove up there and the shed is gone but that fern patch is still going strong, spread out maybe 6 feet wider than I remember. Is there a way to tell how old a fern colony like that is, or am I just going to have to guess?
