Vent: library binding class near Philly left my spines cracked

Took a weekend workshop in Lansdale and the instructor had us use this old press with uneven plates, no padding at all. Three of my five books came out with broken joints at the hinge, never saw that before. Anyone else had a bad experience at a local workshop that changed how you prep your spines?
