That press I rescued from a curb had a cracked platen, took 3 tries to fix
Found an old cast iron nipping press on the sidewalk near my shop in Pittsburgh, brought it home for free. The platen had a hairline crack right across the middle, so every press job left a weird bump on the spine. I tried JB Weld first, that failed after one book, then brazing it with a torch and some rod from Harbor Freight, that held up through about 12 case bindings so far. Has anyone else dealt with cracked platens on vintage gear, or is that press better off as a paper weight?
