Rant: My makeshift book press is denting all my corners

I used a stack of bricks and some wood, but now every book has uneven edges. Guess I need to invest in a real press after all.

Are your bricks stacked perfectly flat, because even a slight tilt explains the uneven edges @butler.kevin mentioned.

Yeah the bricks and wood idea is super hard. I mean that's gonna dent stuff for sure. Maybe try putting some thick cardboard or a folded towel between the wood and the book next time? It spreads out the pressure way better, idk. Might save you buying a whole press just yet.

The moisture factor gets overlooked with DIY presses. If you're using wood in a damp basement or garage, the book can absorb that humidity while under pressure (which leads to waves or mold later). Slip some wax paper between the layers first, it acts as a moisture barrier in addition to padding.
