Lightly dampening bookcloth before glueing changed my results

I always had trouble with bookcloth wrinkling when I put it on boards. Someone suggested wetting it a bit first. I started using a damp sponge on the back of the cloth before applying glue. Now, the cloth sticks smooth without any bumps. In my experience, this extra step is worth the time. Your mileage may vary, but it worked for me. I learned this from a binder at a workshop, and I've done it ever since. My books look much better now.

Why do so many crafts need a little water first?

Honestly, water just makes everything stick together better.

Totally get what you mean about water making things stick! It's like the glue in clay or paper mache paste. The water gets between the fibers or particles and sort of locks them together as it dries. It's a simple trick but it works for so many things.
