DAE remember when an old binder in Portland said to skip the sewing frame and just use a curved needle?

I tried it on a 300 page rebind last month and the spine ended up lumpy as hell, so I went back to my frame and it was night and day. Anyone else got a shortcut that totally backfired on them?
