My sister said our book club should stop picking bestsellers
We were talking after our meeting last night about 'The Midnight Library' and she said, 'We keep picking books everyone already has an opinion on before we even read them.' It hit different because she's right, we spent half the time just agreeing with reviews we'd already seen. Has anyone tried a rule where you only pick books under a certain sales number?

Your sister is onto something big lol. My old club did a whole year where we banned anything from the NYT list or booktok. It forced us to dig deeper and the talks got way better because nobody showed up with a hot take ready to go. We found some real hidden gems that way. It makes the whole thing feel more like a discovery and less like homework. Maybe suggest a trial run of three months with that rule and see how it goes.

I used to hate that idea but @jordan_webb's story actually convinced me it's worth a shot.

That's a solid idea from your old club, @jordan_webb. We tried a six-month ban and it was great, but we had to make an exception for book club picks that accidentally hit the list after we chose them.
