Union hall safety meeting in Gary, two old timers went at it over scaffold rules

Was up at the Local 374 hall last Tuesday for the monthly safety meeting and a couple of retired guys got into it about whether clip-on lanyards are worth the hassle on small tanks. One swore they saved his buddy's life on a 30 foot dome in the 80s, the other said they just snag on your gear and cause more trips than they prevent. I know the rules say one thing but I've seen both happen on site, so which side do you actually trust when you're working a tight turnaround?

You really think a lanyard snagging is worse than hitting the deck from 30 feet? That old timer's got it backwards. I've seen guys trip on loose hose more times than I can count, but I've also seen what a fall does to a man's legs. The snag argument is mostly about people not clipping in right or using gear that's beat up. If it's adjusted proper, it's not flopping around enough to catch on stuff. Those rules exist because someone died, not because the union wanted to slow you down. I'll take a few annoying tangles over a hospital visit every single time.
