A guy at the Grand Rapids camera store told me to stop using flash, and my 2am porch shots finally look right
I kept getting these dark, grainy shots of my dog on the porch at night and could not figure out why my phone flash was not helping. A clerk at a camera shop on Division Ave named Ray told me to turn the flash off and just hold still, brace my phone on the railing, and let it soak up light for a couple seconds. Tried it on 3 shots and 2 came out way better, no more blown out eyes and the porch light actually looks like porch light. Now I'm wondering if that trick works for indoor birthday parties too, or if I still need the flash in a dark room?
The clerk telling you to "let it soak up light for a couple seconds" is basically telling you to just roll the dice every time. Long exposures without a flash only work when NOTHING moves, and your dog was probably half asleep on that porch. Try that trick at a birthday party where kids are running around and see how many blurry ghost arms you get. Every single time someone blows out a candle or grandma leans in to cut cake, that shot is gone because your phone needed two full seconds to gather light. A flash is not the enemy here, bad flash technique is, and a clerk at a camera shop should know the difference.
