Saw a working coal forge at a farm museum in Hermann, Missouri and now I have dumb questions
Stopped at this little German farm museum in Hermann, Missouri over the weekend and they had a coal forge set up in the old blacksmith shop, still with tools hanging on the wall. The thing that got me was the fire pot, it was way shallower than the one I built from a brake drum, maybe 3 inches deep, and the clinker breaker looked original. I have been running coal for about a year now and always fought with a deep pot and roasting my stock. The placard said the smith worked there from 1902 to 1938 and mostly did wagon repair and horseshoes. Now I am second guessing my whole setup and wondering if I should cut mine down or just learn to use less air. Any of you run a shallow fire pot, and does it actually help with clinker or am I reading too much into a museum display?

Been fighting the same thing, deep pot is a pain.
