Quenched a batch in old motor oil on a dare and the finish came out darker than anything I've gotten from water
Was finishing up a set of 4 bottle openers for a buddy's wedding up in Fort Wayne and had a jug of used 10w30 sitting on the bench. Figured why not, dunked two of them hot and the color came out this deep black-brown that took a wax coat really nice. The other two went in water like normal and looked plain next to them, so now I'm second guessing every quench I've done in the past 8 months. Oil smoked like crazy so I did it outside with the doors open, smelled up the driveway for a bit. What oil are you guys running for a dark finish, and does the weight actually matter or is it all just the same?
