My forge weld blew apart on a Friday afternoon

Was making a fire poker at my shop in Austin and the billet just exploded on me after I thought I had it fused solid. Had to stop and re-grind everything, anyone else had a weld fail right when you thought it was stuck?

My buddy Dave had a san mai billet come apart on him in San Antonio last spring, about three hours into a Saturday. He had to pick scale out of his shop floor for two days and swore off pattern welding for a whole month. Still won't talk about it without making a face like he bit a lemon.

Three hours into a Saturday is the worst time for that kind of failure too, you're already tired and just want to finish up. I bet that scale was still hot and stuck to everything, man.

@henderson.oscar, is Dave still using that same style billet? San mai is finicky with the steel temps. I've had a couple close calls with 1095 and 15n20. That scale cleanup is brutal, gets everywhere.
