I finally bought a proper post vise and it's a total game changer
Spent about $300 on a used Columbian 4-inch model after fighting with a cheap bench vise for years. The leg absorbs the hammer blows so the work doesn't bounce, which made twisting tenons way easier. Anyone have tips on the best way to mount one to a heavy workbench?

Mounting it directly to the bench top can still transfer some shock. I bolted the leg of my 4-inch vise to a separate 4x4 post sunk two feet into the ground next to my bench. The bench is just for clamping now, and the vise takes all the hammering. It's a bit more work but it's completely solid.

That "sunk two feet into the ground" part is serious dedication. My old man just used lag bolts into his workbench and the whole thing would shake when he really went at something. It worked, but you could tell it wasn't ideal.

People often skip the extra step for a quick fix, then live with the shake forever.
