The dude at the gas station in Omaha who put black pepper on his gas station coffee

I watched him do it last Tuesday and he said "sounds gross, tastes like a campfire," so I tried it and now I can't drink it plain. Has anyone else messed with their coffee like this, and what else should I be putting in there?
