Spent 4 months trying to get my dad to watch The Wire, turns out I just had to hand him the remote
My dad is 71 and swears nothing beats the old cop shows he grew up with. I kept telling him The Wire was different, but he shut it down every single time for almost 4 months. Finally I stopped arguing, pulled up episode 1 on his TV in the living room, and just walked out. Two days later he called me asking why Stringer Bell was meeting with Omar, and he had already burned through 5 episodes. He finished all 5 seasons in 11 days and keeps texting me theories about McNulty. Turns out the man just hates being told what to watch, not the show itself. How do you get a stubborn parent into a show without it turning into a fight?
Stop asking and just start it when they're in the room, stubborn parents need to feel like it was their idea. My mom did the same thing with Breaking Bad and now she won't shut up about it.
Start it and then just leave the room. That's the key part. People can't stand walking away from something halfway through, so they'll keep watching to see what happens. My dad swore he hated that show The Wire for years, called it a cop drama with too much talking. Put it on one night while he was reading the paper and I went to do dishes. Came back an hour later and he had moved to the couch and was asking me questions about who Stringer Bell was. Don't hover or act like you're waiting for them to like it either. If you sit there watching them watch it, they'll dig in and turn it off just to prove they don't care. Put it on, then find something else to do in another room. Curiosity does the rest.
