Found a trick for keeping up with subtitles on foreign shows and it fixed my whole night

I kept quitting foreign shows 10 minutes in because I was pausing every few seconds to read the subs. Last week I tried bumping playback to 0.9 speed instead of pausing, and it worked way better than I expected. I got through 4 episodes of a Danish crime show in one sitting without touching the remote once. My eyes just adjusted after about 15 minutes and I stopped missing half the dialogue. Turns out I was reading at my own speed and the pause button was the real problem. Now I want to know if anyone else messes with speed settings, or do you just power through at normal speed and let your brain catch up?
