A customer tried to tell me how to true a wheel yesterday

Guy rolls in with a wheel that looks like a potato chip, says he watched a YouTube video and wants me to just "give it a quick twist." I tried to explain dish and tension and he goes "nah, my buddy said you can fix wobbles by just tightening one side." I spent 10 minutes just getting him to understand that spokes work in pairs. Has anyone else had a customer who watched one video and suddenly knows more than you do?

That 'just give it a quick twist' part got me. I'm curious, after he argued with you for ten minutes, did he actually let you fix it the right way, or did he just grab his potato chip wheel and leave in a huff?

@jordan903 that is WILD. He actually handed me the tools and watched me do it the RIGHT way, like he was waiting for me to mess up.

Three out of five times I've had my car worked on, the mechanic has literally tested me before actually helping. Like one guy asked if I knew where the oil filter was, just watched me fumble around the engine bay for a solid minute, then took over without saying a word. It's this weird gatekeeping thing where people need to see you struggle before they'll give you the real answer. Makes me wonder how much time we all waste proving ourselves before getting actual help.
