Why does nobody talk about the copy machine guy who knows everyone's secrets
The copy machine guy at my office, Dave, comes every other Tuesday to fix the printer on the 4th floor, and he always says hi to me by name even though I've never introduced myself. A few weeks ago he leaned over and whispered that he'd seen my name on about 40 unopened envelopes in the recycle bin near the mailroom, and then he just smiled and went back to swapping out the toner. I didn't know whether to laugh or file a complaint, so I just stood there holding my coffee like an idiot. Turns out he wasn't being creepy, he was warning me that payroll had been mailing checks to an old address for two months, which I only found out when my rent bounced. Has anyone else had a random service worker drop info on them that saved their whole week?
Used to roll my eyes at posts like this, figured the "mystery guy who knows everything" thing was just people reading too much into normal small talk. Then our building's night janitor, Marcus, stopped me by the elevator one morning and asked if I was still waiting on that package from my sister in Ohio. I never told him about any package. He said he'd seen the slip taped to my door three days running and figured nobody had told me it was sitting at the front desk because the mail room closes before I get off work. Saved me a late fee and a birthday fight with my sister. Now I say hi to Marcus every single time, because these folks see way more of our lives than we ever notice.
